Read MoreBefore you jump ahead to the List of Top 10 Things that MTV and Twitter have in Common… please read what lead up to the creation of this list. Recently, I was asked to speak about Social Media at a networking event and I will be given 40 minutes. If, it was you… what would you say? If you attended the event “What would you want to hear?” Please, read on and share your comments. For the last couple of years I have been having one-on-one and group discussions with Professionals and Business Owners about Social Media. With that said, I should be used to it by now, but I’m still surprised by the amount of Professionals, Marketing Directors and those with a degree in Marketing that say “Well, I know I need to be doing that tweeting thing, or well I’m on facebook and I don’t really “Like” it, or now I’m hearing… I don’t think Google+ is going to last.” Sound familiar? As these Business Owners and Professionals build the wall of resistance to Social Media engagement and delay being a part of the conversation their competition are hiring a Professional Social Media strategist like me to Get Started, Get Social and Get Business. So, you may be wondering what made me think of the similarities between MTV and Twitter. Why would I use those points in my opportunity to discuss Social Media? Good question! My audience will include very busy seasoned professionals and they need to wake up and read the writing on their Facebook Wall. I firmly believe that just as “Video Killed the radio star”…. those that do not have an interactive Social Media Presence will lose market share and that brings us to what MTV and Twitter have in common. In September, I will turn 45 years old and I was thinking back to my days as a teenager. At that time, back in the early 80′s MTV introduced Music Video’s to those that paid for Cable Television. If you are my age or older, you did not grow up with the internet. For that matter, we did not grow up with cable television or MTV. What did we do with all that free time… that we weren’t flipping through hundreds of channels, surfing the net or checking our email? I grew up on the south-side of Chicago Illinois in the Midwest of the USA and Chicago did not have cable. (Talk about not wanting to embrace change) But, the suburbs got connected and they had MTV. So, I got to watch music videos with my cousins at their house in the suburbs. At that time there was a popular song “Video killed the radio star.” If you were a popular Musician back in the mid-eighties and you said, well I don’t like MTV, so I will not make a music video or in 90′s you said I will not make a CD. What would have happened to your Music career? The point is…. “It does not matter what you like! What does your audience like? Where are your fans and those that buy your products? That is what matters!” So, what does MTV and Twitter have in common? They are both channels to share information. Both offer an opportunity to reach out to and be seen potentially by millions of real people who make purchasing decisions. Both of these media channels provide “Fans” another way to “Listen” to someone or from a group that they “Like.” Those that have shared of themselves on these channels have taken their careers to new heights. Both were looked at as a Fad. (Makes me think of IBM saying that people will not buy personal computers for their homes… now my smart phone can do as much as my desktop… on the list of Paradigm shifts) Just as Video killed the radio star… Social Media has the potential to kill a business that is not part of the “Online Conversations.” A slow death of decreased market share or bad comments that go viral. They both show the personality and charm (or lack there of) of those that share of themselves on these channels. Both were...
